How AI Can Support Better Business Analysis

The Right Frame for AI in Business Analysis

The conversation about AI in professional services tends to go one of two directions: either AI will automate everything and eliminate the need for analysts, or AI is just a productivity tool that saves time on grunt work. Both frames are incomplete.

The more useful frame is this: AI is changing the floor of analytical work while raising the ceiling of what is possible.

Where AI Creates Genuine Value in Business Work

Research and Information Synthesis AI tools can synthesize large volumes of information quickly. For a business analyst or consultant, this means faster hypothesis formation and the ability to test more ideas before committing to a direction.

Pattern Recognition Across Data AI can identify patterns in financial data, market trends, and operational metrics that would take human analysts much longer to find.

Scenario Modeling Support AI can help build and test scenarios more rapidly, allowing analysts to explore a wider range of strategic options before making recommendations.

What AI Cannot Replace

AI cannot replace judgment. It cannot tell you which assumptions matter most. It cannot navigate the organizational dynamics that determine whether a recommendation gets implemented. It cannot build the trust with a client that comes from demonstrating both analytical rigor and genuine understanding of their business.

The analysts who will be most valuable in an AI-enabled world are those who use AI to go deeper on the judgment calls — the questions that require business experience, contextual understanding, and the ability to synthesize quantitative and qualitative insight into a coherent recommendation.

My Approach

In my academic work and independent research, I use AI tools to accelerate the lower-value steps of analysis so that I can spend more time on the higher-value work: forming a point of view, stress-testing assumptions, and communicating findings clearly.
